About Bolga Baskets
All of the Bolga baskets we carry (Mini market, mini round, medium round) are exclusively woven by the indigenous Frafra people of Bolgatanga, known fondly as Bolga, in Northern Ghana. Weaving is a traditional skill passed from generation to generation, and it is courtesy of the abundant growth of elephant grass in the area that your baskets come to be. Harvested seasonally and prepared to produce a strong straw fibre, it is dyed using traditional plant and non-toxic fabric dyes to give you the beautiful and vibrant colours that Bolga baskets are well known for. The baskets we carry are double woven to ensure extra durability and strength, perfect for children.
Each item is lovingly hand made, and it can take days for each product to be completed. If ever a product were made with love, it’s the Bolga basket.
After weaving, the remaining bits of straw are trimmed and the basket heads to a leather worker for the handles. The handles are mostly made from goat leather, which means that these are not a vegan item, if that influences your purchasing decisions. It is possible to purchase vegan alternatives, however the handle will be less durable without a strong cover. While we don’t stock the vegan alternatives, if you are after one we may be able to point you in the right direction.
All baskets are fumigated in line with strict Australian quarantine regulations.
Product Care and Reshaping
Clean using lukewarm water. Lightly wipe with a damp cloth. Please refrain from using soaps or cleaning products as they may affect the dye.
When we post out your basket, it may arrive flat or out of shape from packaging and travel. To reshape your basket, when it first arrives and at any point thereafter, it’s a very simple fix. Soak the basket in water for a few seconds – you will notice the grass becoming malleable and flexible. While it is damp, reshape it to your desired shape, and dry in natural sunlight for the best results (a heater is the next best option if sunlight is hard to come by). You may also notice your basket may require trimming – this is normal and it is at your discretion as to whether you trim your basket.
Be mindful of the handmade nature of these items. The sizing will never be exact, it may be slightly bigger or smaller than the listed measurements. The images and measurements we provide are a guide only, and while we aim to be as accurate as possible, the reality is that each item is different and unique in it’s own way.
